Title: Building tissues to understand how tissues build themselves
Abstract: Cells assemble into tissues and organs through a process termed self-organization. However, the underlying principles guiding tissue self-organization remain poorly understood. My lab aims to reveal and ultimately harness the principles of self-organization to advance regenerative medicine and to halt the progression of diseases like cancer. I will discuss some of our recent efforts to understand how cell-cell and cell-extracellular matrix interfacial mechanics and their fluctuations contribute to tissue patterning in the mammary gland and small intestine. I will discuss how the relationship between these processes sets an upper limit to tissue structural order and provides a framework to more precisely engineer tissues in vitro.
