Caltech Associates Event: Humanitarianism in the Age of Empire
To explore is to venture into the unknown. From antiquity to the present, whether to new lands on Earth or other planets in the solar system, exploration has led to both extraordinary observations and ideas previously unimagined.
Illuminating his expertise on Christopher Columbus and Iberian voyages around the globe, Caltech history professor Nicolas Wey-Gomez will discuss how early exploration enabled scientific discovery and, surprisingly, gave rise to novel notions about human rights and international law.
