Caltech Associates Holiday Luncheon
11:00 a.m. Reception
11:45 a.m. Luncheon and program
Celebrate the holidays with Professor of Computing and Mathematical Sciences Adam Wierman. Most of us make use of "big data" and "the cloud" all day long without realizing it. Whether on your laptop or smartphone, any online search or personalized web page processes big data using cloud technology. Computing "in the cloud" may seem like something ephemeral, but the cloud actually has a physical presence in the form of data centers filled with thousands of computer servers. Those servers house all the information for your, and everyone else's, Google searches. It's a lot of data, and the power infrastructure needed to run these servers is enormous. Adam Wierman will describe ongoing research at Caltech aimed at building a sustainable computing infrastructure—one where enormous data centers are powered by renewable energy and even serve as virtual energy-storage facilities for more broadly integrating renewable energy into the electrical grid.
