Can we create a Swiss Army knife–type material that can morph between electrical conductor, insulator, magnet, and other exotic states—at the flick of a switch? There are early clues to suggest that extremely short pulses of light, no more than 0.0000000000001 second long, may precisely act as such a switch. We are excited to host this luncheon in partnership with the Office of Gift Planning, in which David Hsieh, assistant professor of physics, will describe efforts at Caltech and elsewhere to push this agenda forward. This modern-day alchemy has the potential to put our current resources to use beyond their original capabilities and may lead to new platforms for understanding fundamental physics.
