Allen Robert Gross, Director
The Caltech Orchestra presents a retirement concert in honor of Dr. Allen Robert Gross after thirty-six years as its Music Director. Featured music will include Wagner's Overture to The Flying Dutchman, the Siegfried Idyll, and excerpts from Die Meistersinger. Haydn's Symphony No. 104 ("London") will conclude the program.
Allen Robert Gross began his association with the ensemble in 1983. Dr. Gross also has served as Music Director and Conductor of the of the Santa Monica Symphony and of Orchestra Santa Monica, and has led tours of the Santa Monica Chamber Philharmonia to international acclaim. He began his conducting career in Germany, where he was a staff conductor in the opera houses of Oldenburg, Aachen and Freiburg, Conductor of the Junges Kammerorchester Heidelberg, and Music Director of the Heidelberg Castle Festival. Among his guest conducting appearances have been concerts in Cuba and China. Before coming to Caltech and Occidental College (where he is Emeritus Professor of Music), he directed the orchestra and opera programs at the University of Louisville (Kentucky).
The Caltech Orchestra is a college-community orchestra consisting of selected students and staff from Caltech, the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and players from their surrounding communities.
There will be a farewell reception for Dr. Gross directly after today's concert.
The same concert will be presented on Saturday, May 25, 2019 at 8:00 p.m.
The concerts are free, with no tickets or reservations required, but early arrival is recommended.
