Directed by Lynne McGrath

Sherlock Holmes premiered in Buffalo, New York in 1899, made its way to New York City where it was a smash hit, and was equally successful in London in 1900 and 1901. The public could now see their hero on stage in the person of William Gillette! Gillette also adapted Conan Doyle's original material. Based on no single story, the play follows three plot threads as Holmes is once more in conflict with Professor Moriarity ("The Napoleon of Crime"). While the master detective's professional activities are as thrilling as ever, his personal condition is deteriorating alarmingly, and results in an ending surprising to himself and his audience.

Admission is $3.00 for members of the Caltech Women's Club; $4.00 for all others. Light refreshments will be served after the reading.

To dine at the Athenaeum beforehand, call (626) 395-8204 for reservations. Plan to be seated by 6:00. You are welcome to join the Playreaders table.
