Caltech Playreaders 66th Season: "A View from the Bridge" by Arthur Miller
Directed by John Davidson
Produced by special arrangement with Dramatists Play Service, Inc.
Pulitzer-winning playwright Arthur Miller illumines the exalted notion that classic tragedy and the modern, common man can coexist. In A View from the Bridge Eddie is a self-imploding Brooklyn longshoreman, a combustible presence in an uneasy ménage with his wife Beatrice, who he loves too little, and his 17-year-old niece Catherine, who he possessively adores. What has remained unspoken among the three becomes destructively obvious after the arrival of Beatrice's Sicilian nephews, illegal immigrants. Narrated by the lawyer/Greek chorus Alfieri, this slow burning cauldron of family love and hate inevitably bursts into white-hot flame.
Arthur Miller's works include such classics as The Crucible, A View from the Bridge, and the Pulitzer Prize-winning Death of a Salesman.
Admission is $3.00 for members of the Caltech Women's Club; $4.00 for all others. Light refreshments will be served after the reading.
