Caltech Playreaders: "The Underpants" by Steve Martin and Carl Sternheim

Steve Martin incorporates sharp, intelligent dialogue and inspired physical comedy into Sternheim's turn-of-the-century satire about a middle-class German family. A pair of underpants sets the action in motion, when young and attractive Louise Maske loses hers in her enthusiasm to get a better look at the German king as he passes by in a parade. Her pompous husband, Theo, fears that this momentary lapse will jeopardize his reputation and his government job. Instead, the incident sets off a chain of leering visitors, longing poets, and unimaginable events that will transform their lives, empowering and emboldening the subjugated Louise. 

Admission is $3.00 for members of the Caltech Women's Club; $4.00 for all others. Light refreshments will be served after the reading.
