Caltech Symphony
- Public Event
Allen Gross, Conductor
The all-orchestra program consists of Beethoven's Egmont Overture, Brahms's Variations on a Theme by Haydn, and Shostakovich's Symphony No. 9.
According to Professor Gross, the program follows an interesting trajectory. "The Egmont Overture is a depiction of oppression concluded by triumph. The Haydn Variations display Brahms's mastery of the traditional variation form in a symphonic setting. Shostakovich's Ninth Symphony was written in 1945, at the end of The Great Patriotic War (World War II to us), and if you don't know this piece, you might be inclined to expect something other what you will hear. Be prepared to be surprised!"
The Caltech Symphony is a college-community orchestra comprised of students from Caltech, Jet Propulsion Laboratory staff, and players from the surrounding community. Director Allen Robert Gross is in his 33rd year of conducting at Caltech.
There will be only one performance of this program, so plan to arrive early for seating. This concert is free and open to the public, with no tickets or reservations required. Parking is also free.
