Tidal energy in Newtonian two-body motion
Sohrab Shahshahani,
Department of Mathematics and Statistics,
University of Massachusetts Amherst,
In this talk we discuss the tidal energy for the motion of two gravitating incompressible fluid balls with free boundaries, obeying the Euler-Poisson equations. When the fluids are replaced by point masses, the conic curve describing the trajectories of the bodies are known according to the classical analysis of Newton. We will consider the effect of replacing point masses by fluid balls in this analysis. This is joint work with Shuang Miao from Wuhan University.
