In quantum gravity, spacetime is believed to emerge from more fundamental constituents. A profound difficulty of the theory is that these constituents are strongly interacting. In this talk, I will describe how some universal features of quantum gravity, including the physics of black holes, can be analyzed using the bootstrap paradigm for strongly interacting quantum systems. This leads us from black hole thermodynamics to the notorious "sphere packing" problem in mathematics, first studied by Johannes Kepler and contemporaries four centuries ago.
