Formed in 1985 with the encouragement of the Juilliard Quartet, the Cassatt String Quartet won the Coleman-Barstow prize in 1986, and also top prizes at the Fischoff and Banff International String Quartet Competitions with playing later described in The New York Times as "impressively rich and passionate." The Quartet made its Coleman series debut in 1993, and returns this year with guest oboist Humbert Lucarelli (a Competition judge in 1982), of whose work a Washington Post reviewer said, "the distinguished art of Bert Lucarelli was beautifully at the service of the music." The Quartet takes its name from the American impressionist painter Mary Cassatt.
