CMA presents: Inside the Inside Stories: Hear from Four Curiosity-Inspired Authors
The Mars Science Laboratory mission sent a large, mobile laboratory—the rover Curiosity—to the surface of the Red Planet to assess whether that world ever had an environment able to support microbial life. Managed by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) for the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), the mission has delivered exciting results and fascinated fans of exploration and science worldwide, who have seen Curiosity-related Twitter posts, news stories, television documentaries, and Times Square displays. Please join us as four Curiosity-inspired authors participate in a panel discussion highlighting the dramas and heroes of the mission, from development challenges to puzzling science results. They will read passages from their books, tell stories, and answer questions.
Marc Kaufman, who has reported on space missions for the Washington Post and New York Times, wrote Mars Up Close: Inside the Curiosity Mission.
JPL's own Rob Manning co-authored with William Simon Mars Rover Curiosity: An Inside Account from Curiosity's Chief Engineer.
Rod Pyle, author of multiple books about NASA exploration of the Moon and Mars, wrote Curiosity: An Inside Look at the Mars Rover Mission and the People Who Made It Happen.
Roger Wiens of Los Alamos National Laboratory penned Red Rover: Inside the Story of Robotic Space Exploration, from Genesis to the Mars Rover Curiosity from his perspective as principal investigator for the rover's laser-firing instrument.
This event is free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome. Because of security requirements, individuals without JPL badges must have a Laboratory employee or resident affiliate submit a visitor request and be their escort. Foreign-person visitor requests must be submitted at least four working days before the event; U.S.-person visitor requests must be submitted at least two working days before the event. For more information, contact David Delgado at [email protected], or email [email protected].
Your membership in CMA is what inspires us to bring great speakers and events to Caltech (Campus and JPL). If you enjoy attending these events, please support CMA so we can continue to provide the best in thought-provoking engagements. Membership is open to all active and retired employees of Caltech and to contract employees as affiliate members. See the CMA website for more information about our mission and how to join.
