David MacKay (PhD '92), Chief Scientific Advisor, DECC; Professor of Natural Philosophy, University of Cambridge,

The Caltech Management Association is presenting a special lecture by Caltech alum and Cambridge University professor of physics David MacKay, PhD '92, at 4:45 p.m. on Wednesday, April 7, in JPL's Flight Projects Center Auditorium (Building 321). MacKay is the chief scientific advisor for the UK's Department of Energy and Climate Change and author of Sustainable Energy—Without the Hot Air.

When it comes to saving the planet, "every little bit helps!" Or does it? To answer this question, David MacKay believes that we need to introduce simple arithmetic into our discussions of energy and climate change. He believes that clear, simple numbers will counteract wishful thinking and help clarify how big our challenge is.

Join us as Professor MacKay debunks grand-sounding schemes that actually don't work and discusses how to create an energy plan that adds up.

David MacKay was appointed Chief Scientific Advisor to the United Kingdom's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) in October 2009. In this role, he ensures that the Department's policies and operations, and its contributions to wider issues, are underpinned by the best science and engineering advice available. Professor MacKay studied Natural Sciences at Trinity College, University of Cambridge; then went on to Caltech to complete a Ph.D. in Computation and Neural Systems in 1992. After graduating from Caltech, he returned to Cambridge as a Royal Society research fellow at Darwin College. In 1995, he became a university lecturer in the Department of Physics, where he was promoted in 1999 to a readership and in 2003 to a professorship in Natural Philosophy. He was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 2009.

This event is free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome.

If you are located at Campus and wish to attend, please provide information for the JPL Visitor Control process by March 31, by responding at http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/CMA-MacKay.

Because of security requirements, Campus personnel and guests must be processed through JPL Visitor Control and escorted by a JPL employee or resident affiliate for access to the Flight Projects Center auditorium.
