CMA Presents "Fuel Cells: Part of the Energy Solution?"

Wednesday, August 20, 2008
4:45pm to 6:00pm
Add to Cal
JPL, von Karman Auditorium
Sossina Haile, Professor of Materials Science and of Chemical Engineering, Caltech,

As the world's fossil fuel resources dwindle, the importance of implementing alternative energy systems is becoming increasingly apparent. Not only do we need to find carbon-neutral fuel sources to slow global warming, but the world's energy needs will continue to grow by an estimated 50 percent by 2050. Fuel cells are being touted as an energy source of the future, for vehicles, local off-grid power supplies, and small and hand-held electronic devices. Join us as Dr. Sossina Haile discusses the challenges and promises of fuel cell technology.

Dubbed a "supra-heroine" by Newsweek for her green technology research, Dr. Haile has created innovative solid-acid fuel cell technology that produces power at a significantly lower cost. Superprotonic, a start-up based on her technology and founded by two of her former graduate students, has begun shipping the first commercial prototypes to energy-systems makers. Although their output is barely enough to power a 100-watt bulb, these prototypes may one day lead to powerful fuel cells for commercial use. Dr. Haile received her B.S. and Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and M.S. from the University of California, Berkeley.

This event is free. All members of the Campus and JPL communities and retirees are welcome. Caltech personnel and guests can access the auditorium via the external gate. For more information about this event, please send e-mail to [email protected] or call Emily Abbott, (626) 395-6373.
