Debbie Millman
Host of Design Matters, and International Brand Strategist

Why do some symbols become powerful? Why are some easily forgotten? "Branding" has become a buzzword these days, but at its root, it means "to make symbols meaningful." In this talk, Debbie Millman will look through an anthropological lens at why humans are so attracted to symbols and show us how brands connect with our most hard-wired, basic instincts to represent who we are and what we believe.
Named "one of the most influential designers working today" by Graphic Design USA, Debbie Millman is a multidisciplinary storyteller who works as an artist, writer, and strategist, with 30 years of experience developing some of the most recognizable brands today. She is the creator and host of the acclaimed podcast Design Matters, the first and longest-running podcast about design, where she holds in-depth discussions with international leaders of design and culture. In addition, she is the Chief Marketing Officer of Sterling Brands, President Emeritus of the American Institute for Graphic Artists, and co-founder of the Graduate School of Branding at the School of Visual Arts in New York. Debbie's written and visual essays have appeared in publications such as The New York Times, New York magazine, Print magazine, Design Observer, and Fast Company, and she is the author of six books.
