Bridging Classrooms and Communities: Empowering Students through Anti-Racist Community Engagement
Join CPET and the CTLO in engaging with Suzanne Iwanicki, Assistant Professor of Biology and Environmental Science + VOICES Co-Director, Pasadena City College and Jessica Blickley PhD, Assistant Professor of Biology + VOICES Co-Director, Pasadena City College.
"Community-engaged (CE) pedagogies aim to bridge the gap between academic learning and real-world issues, equipping students with the knowledge and skills to address locally-relevant environmental and social justice challenges. In this session, we'll explore how anti-racist implementations of CE pedagogies can dismantle traditional classroom hierarchies and enable students to become agents of positive change in their own communities. As co-directors of VOICES (Voices Opposing Injustice through Community-Engaged Scholarship) at Pasadena City College, we will provide an overview of our grant-funded efforts to establish a social/environmental justice-themed STEM transfer pathway. We'll delve into examples of community engagement in STEM courses and discuss ways to craft liberatory learning experiences through genuine community engagement."
Lunch will be provided.
