We invite all interested graduate students and postdocs to join us on Monday, April 24th at 3-4pm in the CTLO Workshop Space for an in-person workshop on the effects of stereotype threat and deficit mindset on student learning and achievement.

The ways in which we view our students, along with the ways in which our students view themselves, has a drastic effect on student learning. In this workshop, we will first learn about how the exposure to negative stereotypes—especially for those who belong to traditionally marginalized social identities—may have a detrimental effect on student performance, and we present an evidence-based approach that may implemented in order to buffer against these negative effects. We will also investigate how viewing our students in terms of what they are lacking may change the ways in which we teach or assess our students, and how this can lead to subsequent negative outcomes for student achievement. These discussions will lead us towards tangible strategies that we may implement to shift our teaching towards an asset-mindset, whereby we view the unique strengths of our students as a way to building a more robust learning community.
