The CPA Diversity Committee is hosting its next speaker, Prof. Derek Braun, from Gallaudet University, for the ongoing Disability in STEM seminar series. (Zoom-only event!)
Talk Title: Cultural Competency and Accessibility for Mentoring Future Deaf Scientists

Bio: Dr. Braun is a long-time faculty member at Gallaudet University with a background in computer science and genetics. As one of the very few Deaf geneticists in the world, he has been interviewed and featured in "Scientists with disabilities: Access in all areas" in Nature, "Science in Sign Language" in ASBMB Today, and in All in the Mind, a radio show by Australian Broadcasting Corp, among others. He also presented at TEDxMidAtlantic 2013. He has done research in molecular genetics, population genetics, and cultural competency in mentoring Deaf students in research experiences. Outside of being faculty, he has been rock climbing for ten years and works occasional weekends as a climbing instructor and guide, and hosts local climbing events through Climb Deaf DC.
