Water covers more than 70 percent of the Earth, yet we know little about the ocean bottom as humans cannot reach these depths unassisted. Robotic submersibles allow us to explore this alien landscape. How can a robot survive the crushing pressure and pitch blackness of the ocean bottom? What are the challenges for sensing and navigation? We will investigate these questions with stunning footage and insights from the documentary Dive to the Bottom of the World.

This high-definition movie will serve as the springboard for a lively discussion about the science behind the beauty and wonder of nature.

Eric Wolff, a graduation student in the Division of Engineering and Applied Science at Caltech, will introduce the film and guide the post-screening discussion.

Recommended for ages 8 and up.
