Exploring the solar system: Who has done it, how, and why?
Peter Westwick,
Lecturer in History, Caltech; Research Professor of History, USC; Director, Aerospace History Project, Huntington-USC Institute on California and the West,
Abstract: For over fifty years humankind has been sending spacecraft out to explore our solar system. This talk will consider the types of people, disciplines, institutions, and states that have pursued planetary exploration; the technologies and approaches they have used; their motivations and justifications; and how all of these changed over time. It will also consider the scientific and societal return on all of this effort.
