Large Deformations and Instabilities in Soft Materials
Shengqiang Cai,
Assistant Professor,
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering,
University of California San Diego,
Large deformation and instability phenomena in soft materials can be commonly found in biological systems and engineering applications. In particular, the mechanical performance of soft materials are critical in several emerging techniques, including elastomeric transducers, soft robotics and biocompatible energy harvesters. In the seminar, I will discuss the large deformation in soft materials (e.g., hydrogels and dielectric elastomers) induced by different fields, such as electric field, chemical field and temperature field. Nonlinear field theories and numerical simulation results will be presented. In addition, I will introduce a recently identified elastic instability: creasing instability, associated with large deformations in soft materials.
