Gravitational-Wave Research Seminar

    I will present an overview of the ideas related to making inferences on cosmological parameters with gravitational wave signals. The talk will then focus on the use of binary neutron star coalescences, detected with future ground based interferometers, to infer not only the luminosity distance, but also the source redshift.  I will describe how this is possible via two mechanisms, via the final inspiral stages of the merger and during the hyper-massive neutron star post-merger phase.  I will conclude with a discussion of the practical challenges that must be overcome in order to elevate ground based gravitational wave cosmology to levels of accuracy competitive with future electromagnetic observations.
