Title: Portrait of the Artist as Scientist: Agostino Scilla among the Galileans
Abstract: At some point after the publication of an important book on the fossil record of Sicily and Malta, Vain Speculation Undeceived by Sense (1670-71), the Messinese artist Agostino Scilla (1629-1700) painted a self-portrait. This talk explores Scilla's relationship to the world of the seventeenth-century Galileans between Messina and Rome, and his understanding of how to approach science as an artist in the late seventeenth century.
