Flutist and composer Valerie Coleman founded Imani (the word is Swahili for "faith") Winds with a mission to broaden the scope of classical music, including the use of call-and-response in performance. The group s success prompted Andrew Adler to write in the Louisville Courier-Journal "To every idiom they brought insight and fluency, wrapped in a gentle imperative that urged listeners to share their pleasures of ongoing discovery." "It's some of the most exciting chamber playing I have heard in a long time, a fresh breeze that carries the scents of the past and the future" (John Chacona in the Erie Times-News).

Program:

  • De Falla: Four Spanish Pieces (trans. Peterson)
  • Traditional: Steal Away (arr. Coleman)
  • Coleman: Concerto for Wind Quintet
  • Schifrin: La Nouvelle Orleans
  • Piazzolla: Oblivion (arr. Scott)
  • Hindemith: Kleine Kammermusik, Op. 24, No.2

This performance is sponsored by Lois Brown.
