Occupation 101 (NOTE NEW DATE): Post-Screening Discussion with the Filmmakers
- Public Event
The film features interviews with some of the Middle East's leading scholars, peace activists, journalists, religious leaders and humanitarian workers whose voices have too often been suppressed in American media outlets, as well as many heart wrenching testimonials from victims of this tragedy.
The film covers a wide range of topics, which include the first wave of Jewish immigration from Europe in the 1880's, the 1920 tensions, the 1948 war, the 1967 war, the first Intifada of 1987, the Oslo Peace Process, Settlement expansion, the role of the United States Government, the second Intifada of 2000, the separation barrier and the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
A discussion with brothers Abdallah Omeish and Sufyan Omeish will follow the screening. Born in Tripoli, Libya, they immigrated to the U.S. in 1982 as young children. Working for a humanitarian relief agency, Abdallah traveled to Kosovo, Turkey, Ethiopia, and the Chechen border where he filmed the tragic effects of war, famine, and natural disasters. Sufyan left his IT career to team up with his brother Abdallah, and they both traveled to the Middle East shortly after new clashes erupted between Israeli soldiers and Palestinian demonstrators to see for themselves what was not being reported in the US Media.
