Finding Needles in a Haystack
Sanjay Chawla, Professor, School of Information Technologies, University of Sydney,

In this talk, I will overview machine learning and data mining techniques to discover outliers and  anomalies in large and high-dimensional data. Anomaly detection will be cast as an optimisation problem and different formulations will lead to the discovery of different types of anomalies. Several example applications will be given and the interplay between computational and statistical aspects of "big data" problems will be highlighted.

Sanjay Chawla is a Professor in the School of Information Technologies at the University of Sydney. He is currently on sabbatical leave at the Qatar Computing Research Institute where he is a Principal Scientist in the Data Analytics Group. He received his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Tennessee in 1995.
