Stacked codes: universal fault-tolerant quantum computation in a two-dimensional layout
Tomas Jochym-O'Connor,
University of Waterloo,
In this talk, I will outline a method to perform universal quantum computation in a 2D layout using multiple copies of the 2D color code. Namely, by introducing non-local measurements along 1D strips in a specific 2D architecture along with a set of local gauge measurements, a fault-tolerant mapping is created between a 2D color code and a 3D color code, the stacked code. As only logical Clifford gates can be implemented transversally for 2D topological stabilizer codes, this transformation provides a means to complete a universal fault-tolerant gate for fault-tolerant quantum computation without the need for magic state distillation.
