Fault-tolerance in topological stabilizer codes and universal workarounds

Abstract: Topological stabilizer codes are among the most promising architectures for realizing fault-tolerant quantum computation. Yet, their computational power is restricted in two dimensions, inhibiting their ability to perform universal computation. In this talk, I will discuss such restrictions and expand upon techniques developed to circumvent such limitations, introducing non-local elements in a fault-tolerant manner.
