On Cooperation in Networks and the Power of One Tiny Link
Michelle Effros,
George Van Osdol Professor of Electrical Engineering,
Caltech,
Cooperation between independent communicators has long been seen as a potential path to increasing communication rates in networks. Unfortunately, the benefits of cooperation come at the cost of coordination, and traditional cooperation models yield communication benefits no greater than their coordination costs. This talk introduces a new model of cooperation, relates the cooperation question to a long standing open mystery about the power of a single link, and definitively answers the question of whether the benefit of cooperation can ever exceed its cost.
