Presented By: | The Caltech Y and the Social Activism Speaker Series |
Why Some Men Hurt Women and How All Men Can Help
The Macho Paradox explores some of the ways that male culture contributes to sexual and domestic violence, and suggests strategies to enlist men in the fight against all forms of men's violence toward women. Katz accentuates the importance of understanding - and changing - the cultural environment that condones or promotes sexism and violence. He is the author of the book of the same name, The Macho Paradox (2006).
An educator, author and filmmaker, Jackson Katz is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking work in the field of gender violence prevention education with men and boys, particularly in the sports culture and the military. He has lectured at colleges and conducted trainings, seminars, and workshops in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and Japan.
Katz is the co-founder of the Mentors in Violence Prevention (MVP) program, the leading gender violence prevention initiative in professional and college athletics. He is the director of the first worldwide domestic and sexual violence prevention program in the United States Marine Corps. He is also the creator and co-creator of educational videos for college and high school students, including Tough Guise: Violence, Media, and the Crisis in Masculinity (2000) and Spin the Bottle: Sex, Lies and Alcohol (2004).
The Social Activism Speaker Series is a Caltech student organization that focuses attention on current social and political issues by inviting prominent activists to share their experiences and perspectives with the Caltech community and the public. This student-run series is coordinated with the help of the Caltech Y, and is made possible by contributions from the Moore Hufstedler Fund, Student Affairs, Campus Life, the Alumni Association, the Graduate Student Council, and the Caltech Y, as well as staff support from Public Events.
