In the future, the diagnosis of disease will be done with a tiny collection of cells, making invasive surgery unnecessary. That breakthrough will come only when scientists coordinate the fields of nanotechnology, microfluidics, and systems biology--leading to a better understanding of a biological organism. By merging recent advances in nanoscience and technology, it may be possible to carry out a systems biology analysis at the level of a single cell in real time. However, the experimental challenges are daunting. Several groups from Caltech, UCLA, and the Institute for Systems Biology have come together, forming the NanoSystems Biology Alliance, to work on this problem. Heath will present the background, early successes, and challenges that will be solved over the next couple of years.
