Founded at the Colburn School in February 2005, the Janaki Trio is proving to be one of today's swiftest rising young chamber music ensembles. The trio recently won Grand Prize at the 59th Annual Coleman Chamber Music Competition in May. In the past four months, the trio has performed at a variety of venues, including the Doheny Mansion, Zipper Hall, and Temple Beth Hillel, and is also in high demand for private recitals throughout the Los Angeles and San Francisco areas. Individually, the members of the trio have performed at the Aspen, Tanglewood, Taos, Yellow Barn, Great Lakes, Schleswig-Holstein, and Marlboro music festivals. They have collaborated with such eminent musicians such as David Soyer, Ronald Leonard, Jaime Laredo, and Mitsuko Uchida, and have studied with Kim Kashkashian, Sylvia Rosenberg, and the Guarneri, Juilliard, and Takacs Quartets.

Each member of the Janaki Trio has a strong commitment to music education and has organized and performed in outreach concerts across the United States and Canada. This season, the Janaki Trio will be working with the Da Camara Society in promoting music education in elementary schools and other community venues throughout the Los Angeles area. Other engagements of the season include the "Sundays At Two" recital series in Beverly Hills, the "Previews" at Trinity Lutheran in Manhattan Beach, and the inaugural concert of the newly-erected pavilion for the Mandell Chamber Music Series in Brentwood, California.

At the Colburn School, the members of the Trio study privately with Robert Lipsett, and with Paul Coletti and Ronald Leonard, who also serve as the trio's coaches. Serena McKinney performs on a Camillus Camilli violin (circa 1742) on loan to her from the Mandell Collection of Southern California; Katie Kadarauch performs on a viola by Bartolmeo Obici (Verona, 1748); and Arnold Choi performs on a Carl Becker cello made in 1916.

The program for this concert will feature works by Penderecki, Beethoven, Schubert, and Dohnanyi.

In recognition of the remarkable talent of these young performers, this performance will be supported, in part, by the Kitty Macdonnell Fund, which honors the late Friends of Beckman Auditorium coordinator and tireless organizer of the Dabney Lounge Chamber Music Series.
