Sofic entropy theory
Entropy theory in the dynamics of single transformations is useful for distinguishing dynamical systems and providing a structure theory. The case of large groups of transformations, especially non-amenable discrete groups, requires a (relatively) new approach, through finite approximations to the given group, called sofic approximations. I'll give a gentle introduction for a general audience.
