Using High-Order CFD Methods to Predict and Understand Complex Unsteady Flows
Antony Jameson, Thomas V. Jones Professor in the School of Engineering, Aeronautics and Astronautics, Stanford University,
Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is currently on a plateau where there are numerous production CFD codes with a well validated capability to solve the Reynolds averaged Navier Stokes (RANS) equations. After a review of the history CDF and current practice in the Aerospace Industry, the talk will examine issues that must be addressed to enable large eddy simulation (LES) for industrial problems of interest, with an emphasis on the formulation and development of high order methods for unstructured meshes in order to treat complex geometric configurations. Ultimately these methods should provide the capability to treat hitherto intractable problems of transitional, separated and vortex dominated flows.
