Mechanical and Civil Engineering Seminar Series

Title: Cooperative Data-Driven Modeling

Abstract: Our scientific community has made great strides in data-driven design and modeling. However, artificial neural networks are currently developed for specific tasks because they suffer from catastrophic forgetting. This is a major impediment to cooperative data-driven modeling. We present a new method addressing this issue in an attempt to open the field to cooperation.

Bio: Miguel Bessa and his research group envision a new era for the design of materials and structures using artificial intelligence. Miguel received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from Northwestern University in 2016 as a Fulbright scholar. After a short postdoctoral position at Caltech (2017) and a quick leap from Assistant to Associate Professor (2021) at Delft University of Technology, he joined the Solid Mechanics Group at Brown University in the Summer of 2022.

NOTE: At this time, in-person Mechanical and Civil Engineering Lectures are open to all Caltech students/staff/faculty/visitors.
