Monodromy results for abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces with bad reduction

We present a local monodromy theorem for abelian surfaces and K3 surfaces using explicit geometry of moduli spaces in characteristic p. This generalizes the work of Igusa, who studied the Galois representation associated to the p-power torsion points of the universal elliptic curve around a supersingular point of the modular curve, to the setting of orthogonal Shimura varieties.
