Science and Human Values
Prof. G.V. Venkataraman, Physicist, Retired; Fellow of the Indian Academy of Sciences,

The purpose of this talk is to suggest how integrating science with the practice of human values could help humankind shape a better and happier future. One who embraced such as vision was Prof. Victor Weisskopf who emigrated from Austria in the thirties to escape from Hitler, worked in the Manhattan Project and later served as a Distinguished Professor at MIT.  Weisskopf noted that knowledge and compassion are the two pillars of society and that one of them alone would not do. Professor Venkataraman will share how the practice of Human Values in daily life leads to harmony with nature. An example is then presented of a major social welfare project where modern scientific knowledge and compassion have been integrated to benefit society. After drawing attention to remarks of some leading American commentators concerning this matter, the talk concludes with references to a future where science and the practice of human values bring harmony and peace in
the world.
