Steve Barr founded Green Dot Public Schools in 1999 "to drive substantive reform in secondary education throughout Los Angeles and ultimately the State of California." Prior to founding Green Dot, Mr. Barr held a number of leadership positions in political and social service organizations. He has also been active in politics throughout his professional career, serving on the national campaigns of President Clinton, Senator Gary Hart and Governor Michael Dukakis, and as a finance chair for the Democratic Party. In 1990, Mr. Barr co-founded Rock The Vote, which led the way to the first upward surge in 18-24 year old voting since the passage of the 26th Amendment.

By operating exceptional small, charter high schools in LA's highest need areas and developing the strategic partnerships needed to foster change, Green Dot is proving that schools in Los Angeles can do a far better job of educating students if they are small and operated more effectively. To date, Green Dot has opened five schools in urban Los Angeles, each of which is substantially outperforming comparable public schools.

This event is part of the Caltech Y's Social Activism Speaker Series, which focuses attention on current social and political issues by inviting prominent activists to speak to the Caltech community and the public, and to share their experiences and perspectives.
