Symposium on African Health: HIV and Malaria, Two of Africa's Greatest Dangers

As conventional means fail to conquer Africa's deadliest diseases, researchers are starting to look outside the box. The sympmosium will present new solutions to two of Africa's greatest dangers, HIV and malaria.

Participants:

  • Dr. David Baltimore, Nobel Laureate and President Emeritus of Caltech, will present the headlining lecture on his novel approach to combating HIV through gene therapy.
  • Dr. Joel Breman, senior scientific advisor at the Fogarty International Center of the NIH, who will discuss the epidemiology of malaria
  • Dr. Bruce Hay, associate professor of biology at Caltech, who has developed a technique for engineering malaria-resistant mosquitoes
  • Dr. Martha Sedegah, senior scientist at the Naval Medical Research Center, who will discuss a new malaria vaccine
  • Huntington Hospital's Dr. Kimberly Shriner will discuss her leadership of a community-based clinical effort to assist in the control of HIV/AIDS in Tanzania
  • Mr. Afam Onyema, chief operating officer of the GEANCO Foundation, will discuss his organization's hospital development project in Nigeria.
