Title: From virtual reality to reality: How neurons create space from time
Abstract:
How does the brain create perception of space? For half a century the prevailing hypothesis has been
that a brain region called the hippocampus uses synaptic plasticity
to combine information from visual landmarks, resulting in "place cells" that form a cognitive map. Despite great progress and the 2014 Nobel prize, the mechanisms of how a sense of abstract space emerges
from concrete stimuli and the coordinated activity across vast networks has remained a mystery. Electrophysiology in virtual reality
and computational modeling has revealed surprising findings that address this and point to deeper mysteries.
The results have significant implications for VR users, the diagnosis and treatment of learning disorders, esp. Alzheimer's, and Artificial Intelligence.
