The Teaching and Learning Project, a National Photographic Essay on Higher Education Featuring Caltech
In 2013, Caltech joined several other universities in becoming the subject of a project to capture in images the new realities of teaching and learning in higher education. Since then, 17 colleges and universities nation-wide have become part of the Teaching and Learning Project, with resulting publication in the journal Thought and Action and showings at multiple campuses. The striking images, in the tradition of early street photographers such as Robert Frank and Lisette Model, evoke the development of mutual respect for our respective work, as well as the many challenges we face in becoming model instructors and students. Often, the photographs take us beyond our conventional notions of what it means to teach, and to learn, as faculty and students today.
Join photographer and faculty member in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, Martin Springborg, for a talk discussing both the process and products of photographing today's higher education landscape, with a keen eye for the moment-to-moment interactions and environments that make up the tapestry of our collective experience. Martin will also engage participants in learning and applying some fundamentals of photography, so that they have the tools to document their own experiences at Caltech for possible inclusion in a future photographic exhibition.
Martin teaches photography and art history and works in the field of educational development. Related to this work, he currently serves as chair of the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network in Higher Education's Professional Development Committee. Martin's current photographic work is focused on teaching and learning in higher education. Image samples from his project Teaching and Learning and others can be viewed at www.springborgphoto.com. His other research interests include assessment methods in Arts disciplines. When he's not making photographs, teaching or writing about teaching, Martin enjoys fly-fishing in Minnesota lakes and rivers.
