Numerical simulations on supercomputers have probed naked singularities in spacetime and discovered toroidal black holes, and have forced Stephen Hawking to concede a bet to Caltech's Kip Thorne and John Preskill. A Cornell/Caltech collaboration will simulate collisions of black holes, testing general relativity's prediction that black holes exist, and providing tools to interpret the gravity wave observations of LIGO.
