Women's History Month Event
7:00-7:30 PM - Appetizers and drinks on the West Patio
7:30-9:00 PM - Talk and Discussion
Do you ever think about media's influence on the products you buy, the way you dress, or your sense of identity?
Do you ever consider that media portrayals of women might influence your body image and self-esteem, social expectations about gender roles, and personal aspirations?
Do you know that the way women are portrayed in the media has been linked to eating disorders and lack of interest in STEM careers in young girls?
In our media saturated world, it is hard to escape the onslaught of messages that tell us how we should be or look, sell us products to achieve the ideal body or identity, and pressure us to reshape our bodies with promises of happiness and success. How can we protect our self-image from media's narrow and unrealistic ideals that can make us feel less confident and accepting of ourselves?
Please join us for a discussion about who we are in the changing culture for women and girls. We will learn about:
- the media's impact on the way we see ourselves;
- media literacy strategies to critically analyze media images and messages;
- tools to empower ourselves and our children in the digital culture.
Ticket Price: $10
