Re: Follow up on campus emergency response
Dear Students:
This morning, Thursday, April 6 at 4:28 a.m., Caltech Security issued a shelter-in-place notice in response to an unconfirmed report of an armed person on campus. Pasadena Police and Caltech Security responded, searched the campus, and determined the report was not credible. The campus has been cleared for a return to normal activities. In an abundance of caution, Caltech Security will have an increased presence on campus and officers will be seen patrolling. All buildings are also locked and are only accessible via keycard or key access.
I want to thank you for your cooperation and support throughout the incident. These experiences remind us of the importance of clear emergency safety protocols and compliance with those protocols in a timely and orderly manner. To that end, I will continue to partner with student leaders to ensure that our student community is aware of all efforts in place to support campus safety and understands the Institute's expectations for response in case of an emergency, and to identify opportunities to enhance procedures. Please reach out with any questions or concerns that you may have.
Emergency response incidents also serve as a reminder of the importance of our Everbridge emergency notification systems. Everbridge is the notification system that the Institute will use to inform members of our community of a potential emergency situation and, importantly, to advise on any actions that should be taken in response. Please take the time today to check your notification settings and, if you have not already done so, to download the Everbridge App so that you can receive notifications as quickly as possible. You can download the app for Apple or Google devices now. Instructions on how protocols to log into the app are available on the Emergency Communication and Everbridge App Instructions page.
