Re: Ginsburg Center Construction and California Boulevard Closure

I write to share important updates on construction projects related to the Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement. Work is underway at two campus sites shown on the map linked here: Highlighted in red is the Ginsburg Center main site and in purple is the South Campus utility site. Both sites are vital to campus infrastructure improvements and research advancements, and we are committed to keeping the community informed about their progress and impacts.

Ginsburg Center Main Site
Excavation of the Ginsburg Center site has been completed, and trucks will no longer be hauling dirt from the location. The next phase of construction requires the installation of a tower crane, which will support building assembly and construction. To set up the crane base and erect the crane, a portion of California Boulevard between South Campus Drive (immediately east of the Cahill Center) and Arden Road will be temporarily closed for two periods, during which drivers will be rerouted to Del Mar Boulevard for east- and westbound traffic.

California Boulevard Partial Closure

  • Saturday, March 1, from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
  • From 7 a.m. on Friday, March 14, through 7 p.m. on Sunday, March 16

In early March, construction crews will also begin placing the first concrete mat foundation for the basement of the Ginsburg Center, which will involve concrete trucks entering and exiting the site. Community members who work near the Ginsburg Center site are welcome to join the weekly construction logistics coordination meetings for more specific and timely updates. For information about these meetings, please contact gcqpm@caltech.edu.

South Campus Utility Work
Utility work near the Olive Walk and Gates–Thomas is ongoing to support the Ginsburg Center's power supply and address sewer repairs for Gates–Thomas. This work involves trenching to install electrical conduits and repair sewer lines. Trenching is scheduled to begin during the month of March, and work will continue intermittently through late May. This phase of the project is expected to create minimal vibrations in surrounding buildings, moderate noise levels, and some dust. Crews will implement measures to minimize disruptions and monitor conditions closely.

We recognize the impact that these projects may have on daily campus activities and appreciate your patience as we work to enhance our campus facilities. Future updates will be shared through Facilities communications and community meetings. We remain committed to keeping you informed as we advance these essential projects in support of Caltech's research and education mission.
