Ginsburg Project Construction Update

May 23, 2024

To: The Campus Community
From: David Kang, Associate Vice President of Facilities

I write to provide an update to my May 7 communication on the Ginsburg Center for Quantum Precision Measurement (GCQPM) Project. Beginning Tuesday, May 28, in preparation for the start of construction, the GCQPM project team will set up the staging area for construction trailers, equipment boxes, and other project materials. The two northernmost tennis courts, courts 7 and 8, which are situated across the street on California Boulevard, were identified by campus leadership for this use.

The two courts, which are maintained by Caltech Athletics and include campus pickleball courts, will be closed through the duration of the project (expected completion in Spring 2026). Small, temporary modifications will be made to the courts to allow for small vehicles and project staff to access the site from South Campus Drive. The six remaining outdoor courts, as well as the three indoor pickleball courts, will remain available to student athletes and gym members.

Caltech Facilities, Caltech Athletics, and campus leaders are working together to mitigate the impact of this work and to minimize disruption to campus community members. To that end, in addition to the indoor and outdoor courts that will remain open, The Athenaeum is partnering with Athletics to establish a process by which gym members and student athletes may use The Athenaeum tennis courts when Athletics' courts are otherwise occupied or unavailable. Caltech Athletics and The Athenaeum will communicate directly with their members on changes to or protocols for booking tennis courts.

As we move forward with the GCQPM project, Caltech will continue to provide updates. Members of the community may direct any questions on the project to [email protected].
