Implementation of Electric Vehicle (EV) Charging Fees Effective January 1, 2025

November 11, 2024

To: The Campus Community
From: David Kang, Associate Vice President of Facilities

In an effort to promote sustainable transportation solutions, Caltech has facilitated deploying 147 electric vehicle charging stations within parking structures on campus. These stations have served the Caltech community and the public, providing convenient access to charging services for electric vehicles. Historically, the electricity provided from these EV chargers has been at zero cost to the end users. To adequately maintain this infrastructure and continue to provide this service, end user charges will begin commencing on January 1, 2025.

EV charging users will benefit from enhancements to maintenance and service with dedicated service technicians who will ensure timely resolution of issues and minimize downtime of our charging stations.

The first project to be implemented under the new arrangement will be the installation of new Level 3 chargers in December 2024.

Caltech Community members, including campus and JPL users, should continue to use their caltech.edu or jpl.nasa.gov email address to receive the affiliated rate.

EV Charging Rates Effective January 1, 2025

  • For Caltech/JPL Community (Staff, Faculty, Students):
    • Level 2 Chargers: $0.20 per kWh
    • Level 3 Chargers: $0.40 per kWh
  • For Public Users:
    • Level 2 Chargers: $0.40 per kWh
    • Level 3 Chargers: $0.80 per kWh

An overstay fee of $10/hour will be imposed on vehicles left in Level 3 charging spots after their charging session has completed.
