Art Exhibits Being Installed on Campus for Crossing Over: Art and Science at Caltech, 1920–2020

Now through September 13, a number of indoor and outdoor art exhibits will be installed across campus in preparation for Crossing Over: Art and Science at Caltech, 1920-2020, an exhibition by Caltech Library as part of Getty's PST ART event.

Crossing Over will tell the story of science history and visual culture at Caltech through an expansive public exhibition featuring artwork, historical materials, and installations located around campus. The exhibition will be open to the public September 27–December 15, with indoor exhibit hours on Wednesdays–Sundays, 11 a.m.–4 p.m.

Campus Locations and Installation Timeline

Bechtel Mall will feature an outdoor art installation, Spectrum Petals, by artist Shana Mabari. The piece consists of seven mirrored round lenses in colors of the visible light spectrum, each between three to four feet in diameter, that will be anchored to the ground along Bechtel Mall. Installation September 10–12

Caltech Hall Pond Bridge will feature an outdoor art installation, This Moment in Time, by artist Lita Albuquerque. The bridge will be coated in artificial gold leaf in reference to the stellar nucleosynthesis of gold and other elements theorized at Caltech. The bridge will be inaccessible for pedestrian use from September 9 through December 15. Read more about Lita Albuquerque here.

Installation September 9–12

Ronald and Maxine Linde Laboratory for Global Environmental Science—Coelostat Lobby will feature an exhibition gallery, The Infinite Lawn, which explores images of the cosmos. The gallery will incorporate the coelostat itself, which projects a live image of the sun, as well as objects from Caltech's history of observatories and astronomical images.

Gates Laboratory of Chemistry Annex—Library will feature an exhibition gallery, Time Stream, which explores how scientists and artists have imagined, observed, and studied the universe over the past five hundred years with artwork and rare astronomy books from Caltech's collection by Copernicus, Kepler, Galileo, and others on display.

Installation August 26–September 13

Dabney Hall—Lounge will feature an exhibition gallery, Powers of Ten, on the histories of images in the work of Caltech scientists and engineers. It will highlight new work by Hillary Mushkin, Caltech research professor of art and design, and artist Lia Halloran.

Tianqiao and Chrissy Chen Neuroscience Research Building—Room 175 will feature an optical lens sculpture by Helen Pashgian, former Caltech artist in residence from 1969-1971.
