Re: Vic Clay
I write to announce that Vic Clay, Caltech's director of Campus Security and Parking Services, will leave the Institute on July 16 to serve as chief of police at Harvard University.
In his four years at Caltech, Vic thoughtfully modernized Caltech's security department. He created a team of Special Response Officers, trained first responders able to handle difficult campus situations; established a partnership with Allied Universal Security Services to provide additional coverage and capabilities; upgraded campus electronic security measures, including card-swipe access points, security cameras, and more; revamped the training program for campus security personnel to emphasize continuous training; and heightened the visibility of campus security officers through the introduction of new uniforms and vehicle branding.
Vic was a crucial, strategic partner to Caltech's Emergency Preparedness team, working to enhance the Campus Emergency Management Plan. From the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, Vic and his team have been integral players in the Institute's response. They worked to prepare and then secure the campus during the initial response to the Safer at Home orders, and were essential partners in efforts to isolate, quarantine, test, and vaccinate campus community members throughout the past 13 months.
From his first days at Caltech, Vic brought to his role a high degree of professionalism and credibility from decades of law enforcement experience with the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. This experience allowed Vic to give campus leadership a critical perspective on opportunities for improvement. The changes that he brought to campus will continue to have a positive impact on our community's safety and security as we continue to respond to the pandemic and for years to come.
Upon Vic's departure, Greg Powell will assume the role of Interim Director of Campus Security and Parking Services. A national search for a full-time director, led by search committee chair John Onderdonk, will commence this spring.
Please join me in thanking Vic for his service to Caltech, and in wishing him well as he takes on this next challenge.
